Snakes and Ladders
EveryoneAbout Snakes and Ladders
The board game everyone grew up with. Roll the die, count your way along a hundred squares, climb every ladder you land on and slide down every snake. Play against the computer, or pass one phone or tablet round for two, three or four players. A six rolls again, and you choose whether the last square needs the exact number.
Snakes and ladders is a race along a board of a hundred squares, numbered back and forth from the bottom. Roll the die and move that many squares. Land at the foot of a ladder and you climb straight up it; land on the head of a snake and you slide down to its tail. The first to reach square 100 wins. It is all luck, which is exactly why a small child can beat a grown-up fair and square.
Tips
- Count the squares out loud as the pawn walks. It is good counting practice for young players.
- Rolling a six gives you another roll straight away.
- Choose Exact under Finish for a longer, tenser ending: a roll that is too big walks back down from 100.
- With younger children, Any roll keeps the game short: any roll that reaches 100 wins.
- Up to four players can share one phone or tablet. Each has their own colour of pawn.
Questions
- How many people can play?
- One player against the computer, or two, three or four people taking turns on the same device.
- Do you need the exact number to finish?
- You choose. Any roll lets any roll that reaches 100 win; Exact makes you land on 100 exactly, and extra steps walk back down.
- What happens when you roll a six?
- You move, then roll again.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Snakes and ladders is free in your browser, with no download and no account needed.
- Is it good for young children?
- Yes. There is nothing to read once it starts, the pawn walks every square so children can count along, and the roll is read out for the youngest players.
