About Rupert

Rupert is a prince who was turned into a frog by a witch. In his crown and his red cape he runs, jumps, swings, swims and floats through thirteen worlds and a hundred and fifty-six levels, from the Lily Pond to a mushroom glade, a pirate cove, the desert dunes, the clouds, Canada, the frozen peaks, a fire mountain, a clockwork tower and the witch's own castle. The witch has locked the princess up in her castle. At the end of every world a boss guards a page of the witch's spell: win them all, free the princess, and she reads the words that break it. The bosses are a swamp toad, a great owl, the Puffball King, a sea serpent, Captain Pelican, a rock golem, a giant scorpion, a thunder bird, the Sasquatch, a yeti, a fire dragon, a wind-up knight and the witch's shadow dragon. Halfway through every world a smaller boss waits too. Hunt for keys, outrun boulders, waves and avalanches, race the ghost frog and climb tall towers. Bounce on spring caps, dodge cannonballs, wade through quicksand and maple syrup, bounce off a moose, jump the hockey pucks, swim the rapids, ride conveyor belts, logs, barrels and dragonflies, drop into hollow stumps to find secret rooms, stomp beetles, kick snail shells and flick out his tongue: it reels him in to lily buds, pulls crates along to climb on and yanks the helmets off tin-hat beetles. Every level ends at his lily pond, with a lost tadpole somewhere to find and bring home, and the coins he brings back build his ruined castle again, piece by piece. Three hidden crowns in every level, and a tune for every world. Two bonus worlds are open from the start: Halloween Night; a World Tour of eight countries, from the pyramids of Egypt and the leaning tower to the Kenyan savanna and the fjords of Norway. Then the themed worlds open one after another, each with its own trick and boss: Spring Meadow with magic beanstalks and Mother Stork, Summer Beach with sea spouts and Sharky, Autumn Woods with the wind and the Scarecrow, Winter Hills with sleds and the Snow King, Tulip Land with windmill sails and the Big Heron, Cherry Hills with paper lanterns and the Koi King, the Great Wall with moon gates and the Big Panda, and the Outback with kangaroo rides and Big Croc. Trick Park, open from the start, teaches his new tricks one level at a time: sticky toes to kick up chimneys, the belly slam through crates, switch boxes that swap the red and blue blocks, water and lava rising up a tower, a storm that pushes the level along, air where everything falls up, lantern posts in a dark cave, acorns to spit and bubbles to blow, and the Tin Knight at the end. Every day there is a new level for everyone, with a board of the quickest. Race your own best run as a golden ghost, and dress Rupert up as a pirate, a knight, a wizard and more as the stars add up. And build levels of your own: every ground, creature, ride, trick and boss in the game is in the builder, in any world's look, to play, race your own ghost on, and share with a friend by a link.

Rupert is a jump-and-run platform game. A frog prince in a crown and a red cape runs, jumps, swims and floats on his cape through thirteen worlds, squashing beetles, kicking snail shells, flicking out his tongue to catch wasps, riding logs and dragonflies, and collecting coins and three hidden crown coins in every level. The worlds are the Lily Pond, the Whispering Woods, the Mushroom Glade, the Deep Pond, Pirate Cove, the Glow Caves, the Desert Dunes, the Sky Islands, Canada, the Frost Peaks, Fire Mountain, the Clockwork Tower and the Witch's Castle. A boss waits at the end of each one with the princess: a swamp toad, a great owl, the Puffball King, a sea serpent, Captain Pelican, a rock golem, a giant scorpion, a thunder bird, the Sasquatch, a yeti, a fire dragon, a wind-up knight and the witch's shadow dragon. Two bonus worlds are open from the start, Halloween Night and a World Tour of eight countries, and the themed worlds open one after another: Spring Meadow, Summer Beach, Autumn Woods, Winter Hills, Tulip Land, Cherry Hills, the Great Wall and the Outback, each with its own trick and boss.

Tips

  • Hold jump for a higher, longer leap, and keep holding it on the way down to float on the cape across wide gaps. A quick tap gives a small hop, which is handy under low ledges.
  • Land on a hollow stump to drop into a secret room full of coins. Some hide a crown.
  • Each boss takes three stomps. Some only feel it when they are tired or dizzy: a golem after it charges into a wall, a yeti after a big leap, a dragon when it rests its head, a wind-up knight when it runs down, the Sasquatch when it sits down to rest.
  • Land on beetles, lizards, snails and wasps to squash them. Bounce off one with jump held to reach something high.
  • Hedgehogs are prickly, so never land on one. Jump over it, or knock it out with a kicked snail shell.
  • Stomp a snail and it hides in its shell. Touch the shell to kick it, and it knocks out every creature in its way, so stand clear when it bounces back.
  • The tongue reaches a couple of tiles. It eats beetles, snails and wasps and grabs coins, but bounces off lizards and hedgehogs.
  • A hook glows when the tongue can reach it. Catch it, lean the way you want to go to swing higher, and jump to let go at the top of the swing.
  • In water every jump press is a stroke. Swim up to the surface and keep stroking to leap out onto the bank.
  • Hit the green pods from below. Most hold a coin, some a lily flower that makes the frog big (one extra hit), and a few a golden fly that makes him unstoppable for eight seconds.

Questions

Is it free?
Yes. Rupert plays in your browser with no download and no account needed.
How do I play on a phone?
Slide a thumb on the left half to run and tap the right half to jump, holding it to go higher and float. The round button is the tongue. On a computer, use the arrow keys, space to jump and X for the tongue.
How do I get three stars?
One for reaching the flag, one for finding all three crown coins, and one for finishing without losing a life.
Is it suitable for young children?
Yes. It is made for ages 7 and up, and younger players get five lives instead of three. There is no reading needed to play.
What happens at the end?
At the end of every world Rupert beats the boss and frees the princess, and her kiss turns him back into a prince, until the next world's boss snatches her away. In the Witch's Castle he beats the shadow dragon, and the last kiss breaks the spell for good.
Is there music?
Yes, a tune for each world. Turn it on from the start card of any level, or from the info button.

How to play

  1. Run with the arrows, jump with the big button or space. Hold jump to go higher, and keep holding it to float down on your cape.
  2. In the woods, the tongue (X) catches glowing hooks: swing, lean to swing higher, and jump to let go. In water, every jump is a swim stroke.
  3. Land on creatures to squash them. Hedgehogs are prickly: jump over them. Flick your tongue (X) to eat beetles, snails and wasps.
  4. Land on a hollow stump to drop into a secret room. Logs, leaves, lily pads and dragonflies carry you.
  5. Every world ends with a boss. Jump on its head three times, but some bosses only feel it when they are worn out or dizzy.
  6. Jump at a wall and jump again to kick off it. Press down in the air for a belly slam.
  7. The tongue (X) reels you in to a pink lily bud, pulls a crate with a ring a step closer, and yanks the helmet off a tin-hat beetle.
  8. Find the lost tadpole in each level: it follows you, and is safe once you reach a checkpoint or the pond. Coins you bring home rebuild your castle.
  9. Find the three crown coins and finish without losing a life for three stars.
  10. Build your own: on the map of worlds, tap Build your own. Choose a piece and tap or drag to put it, then Play to try it. Share sends a friend a link to your level.
