EveryoneAbout Chess
Chess with every rule: castling, en passant, promotion, check, checkmate and the draws. Play the computer at easy, medium or hard, two players on one device, or invite a friend online. A helper for learners shows every move a piece can make, rings your pieces that could be taken for nothing, and lets you take a move back.
Chess is played on an eight-by-eight board by two armies of sixteen pieces. Each kind of piece moves its own way, and the game is won by checkmate: attacking the other king so that it has no way out. On twzl you can play the computer at easy, medium or hard, a friend on the same device, or a friend online, with every rule in place, castling, en passant and promotion included.
Tips
- Bring out your knights and bishops early, and castle to tuck your king away behind its pawns.
- Fight for the centre: pawns and pieces on the middle four squares control the most of the board.
- Before every move, ask what the other side is threatening. Most games are lost to a piece left where it can be taken.
- Do not bring your queen out too early: it gets chased around while the other side develops.
- Count the attackers and defenders on a square before you capture there.
- Turn the helper on while you learn: a red ring shows a piece of yours that could be taken for nothing.
Questions
- Is it free?
- Yes. Chess is free in your browser, with no download and no account needed.
- How strong is the computer?
- Easy plays one move ahead and sometimes slips; medium looks three moves ahead; hard thinks for about a second every move and punishes mistakes.
- Can I play a friend?
- Yes. Pass-and-play on one device, or invite a friend online with a link from the game page.
- What counts as a draw?
- Stalemate (no legal move while not in check), fifty moves with no capture or pawn move, the same position three times, or too few pieces left for either side to checkmate.
- What does the helper do?
- It rings pieces of yours that could be taken for nothing, and lets you take your last move back. It is on from the start for kids.
