About Where in the World

The map zooms to the right continent and asks you to put your finger on a country. Eight rounds, drawn from real Natural Earth outlines, so you learn where places actually are, not just what their flag looks like. The younger hubs only ask about the big, well-known ones.

Where in the World names a country and asks you to tap it on the map. The map frames the continent the country is in, so every question teaches the neighbourhood as well as the name. A run is eight countries, drawn from real map outlines, and younger players are only asked about the big, well-known ones.

Tips

  • Read the continent beside the question before you look at the map. It tells you which part of the world you are choosing from.
  • Find a country you already know and work outwards from it. Neighbours are the best clue: a country you are unsure of is usually next to one you are sure of.
  • Use coastlines and shapes. Whether a country has a sea coast, sits inland or is long and thin narrows it down quickly.
  • When you miss, the map shows the right country in green and tells you which one you tapped. Look at both for a moment, because that is how the map sticks.
  • The countries you missed are listed at the end of the run. Go again straight away while they are fresh.
  • Small countries are easier to hit if you aim for their middle rather than an edge shared with a larger neighbour.

Questions

Is it free?
Yes. Where in the World plays in your browser with no download and no account needed.
How is it scored?
Each country found first time is worth 15 points, so a perfect run of eight scores 120. Five of eight is a good round, and stars come from how many you found.
Is there a new map every day?
No. It is not a daily puzzle: each run picks eight countries at random, so you can play as often as you like.
How hard is it?
It depends on the age group. Kids are asked about large, well-known countries, tweens get more, and teens and adults get the whole world.
Is there a leaderboard?
Yes, for tweens, teens and adults, ranked by score. Your best score is also kept on the game.
Can I play with a keyboard?
Yes. Tab moves between the countries on the map and Enter picks one, though a mouse or a finger is quicker.
