Mirror shows half a shape on one side of a fold, and the child fills in the other half so the picture is symmetrical. Six shapes make a run, folding left to right or top to bottom. There is no reading and no arithmetic, only careful looking, which is exactly the skill it practises.
Tips
- Count from the fold, not from the edge. A square two places left of the fold belongs two places right of it.
- Go one row at a time when the fold runs down the middle, or one column at a time when it runs across.
- Fill the squares that touch the fold first, then work outwards. They are the easiest to match.
- A square in the wrong place turns red. Tap it again to clear it, then look at the shape once more before carrying on.
- Once left to right feels easy, switch the fold to top to bottom. It looks like a new game to most children.
- For little ones, say it out loud together: one up, two along. Talking through it builds the habit of checking.
Questions
- What age is it for?
- Ages three to twelve. The grid grows with the age group: six by six for the youngest, eight by eight for six to eight year olds, and ten by ten for older children.
- Does my child need to read?
- No. There is nothing to read and no counting aloud needed, just a shape to copy across the fold.
- How is it scored?
- Each shape is worth 20 points, less 3 for every square put in the wrong place, and never less than 5. A run of six with no slips scores 120 and earns three stars.
- Can I change which way it folds?
- Yes. Choose left to right or top to bottom above the grid, and the game remembers your choice.
- Are there ads?
- No. The areas for children show no ads.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Mirror is free in your browser, with no download and no account needed.
